Do you know all your Early Retirement Options?

There are now many people having to take early retirement on health grounds. If the person with the illness works for a company providing an early retirement scheme for those leaving on medical grounds then that can help a lot; However if it is the spouse of the employee with the ill health problems that needs round the clock care, then early retirement schemes may not be so helpful.

Are you happy with your Retirement Outlook?

There are many web sites that just offer conventional advice and options on early retirement. We suggest an alternative plan.

Retirement ages are being increased, company schemes are being plundered and income from state pensions are in the lap of the gods. If you are happy with your retirement outlook using conventional wisdom then I sincerely wish you luck.

If not then perhaps it's time to think outside the box.

There may be many reasons for early retirement, but ill health or becoming the carer of someone with ill health is a common one and with the increases in retirement ages, it is set to become even more common.

A few years ago I had to give up work to look after my wife. I was already in debt courtesy of my first wife and the CSA and I had been making ends meet by doing overtime; so when I had to give up work there was about £1500 per month going out (much of it 'debt management') and nothing coming in.

To cut a long story short, he only way was to sell the house. The outstanding mortgage was about £48,000 but it was valued at about £160,000 and the endowment policy I had got at the same time was worth about £20,000.

After selling the house, paying off about £30,000 in debts and cashing in the endowment policy we were left with a little over £100,000 to live on.
£100,000 sounds a lot of money, but if you want your own home and a return on investment to fund more than a depressing lifestyle, it's a tight budget. For example, the Annuities-Calculator at www.find.co.uk gives £160,000 as the investment for a 58 year old to give a £850/month return.
Of course at 58 a man has 7 years to wait before any state pension and if you dip into a private pension early, it will be severely diminished.

Now we have a 3-bed bungalow with swimming pool in the caribbean and two properties in the USA providing us with an income.

It has not been easy and we have learned lessons (some expensive) along the way but it beats a council flat!

It may be easier and cheaper than you think, you just have to think outside the box.

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

Unless you have a lot more money than sense, you will want to make sure you know what your options are and which one is best for you.

Your retirement should be a happy occasion, but mistakes can turn it into a nightmare. You owe it to yourself and any dependants to be informed.

Obviously everyone's circumstances are different and you have to keep in mind that anyone offering to sort it out for you may well be more concerned about a commission than your best interests.

Have you got what it takes?

It is not easy to 'pull up sticks' and no one would expect you to do it without a good reason.

So what do you need?

  • A burning desire to better your retirement prospects.
  • A reasonable degree of self-sufficiency.
  • A willingness to learn new things.
  • Roughly about £100,000 equity or more.

If you do not think you can say yes to these then my experiences may not help you, though I could be wrong!
